We spent a half day in St. Louis with kids on our way to Table Rock Lake, Missouri, and it turned out to be the perfect way to break up our drive. Everything we wanted to see was located close together downtown, making it easy to explore without feeling rushed.
⭐ Quick Highlights from Our Half-Day Stop:
- ⚾ Peeked at Busch Stadium and explored the surrounding Ballpark District
- 🍖 Enjoyed an excellent barbecue lunch at Salt + Smoke
- 🏛️ Explored the free museum at the Gateway Arch
- 🎥 Experienced the immersive virtual reality show
- 🚡 Rode the tram to the top of the Arch for incredible views
This itinerary was easy, fun, and one of our favorite travel day stops.
Stop 1: Busch Stadium & Ballpark Village
Our first stop was Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals. Even without going inside, it was fun to walk up to the stadium entrance and see it up close. The kids loved seeing the huge stadium and Cardinals signs, and it gave them a sense of the city’s strong baseball culture.

We then walked across the street to Ballpark Village, a lively area filled with restaurants, open plazas, and Cardinals-themed spaces. It’s very family-friendly during the day, with lots of room for kids to walk around and explore. This was an easy and worthwhile stop that didn’t require much time but added a lot to the experience.
Stop 2: Lunch at Salt + Smoke
We had lunch at Salt + Smoke, located right in Ballpark Village, and it was one of the best meals of our trip. The atmosphere was relaxed and very family-friendly, which made it perfect for a quick stop with kids.
The barbecue was excellent—we especially loved the brisket, ribs, and classic sides like mac and cheese. Service was fast, and the location was incredibly convenient. It was the perfect place to refuel before heading to our next stop.

Stop 3: Visit the Gateway Arch, Museum & Tram Ride
After lunch, we headed to the Gateway Arch, which was the highlight of our visit and an absolute must-do when visiting St. Louis with kids.
We started in the museum, which is free to enter and surprisingly engaging for kids. The exhibits are modern, interactive, and easy to explore without taking too much time. It’s well done and gives helpful context before heading up into the Arch itself.
Next, we did the virtual reality experience, which showed how the Arch was built and offered a unique, immersive perspective. This was a big hit with the kids and helped bring the history and construction to life in a fun, memorable way. The virtual reality show can be purchased as part of a combo ticket with the tram ride or separately for about $8 for adults and $5 for kids, making it an easy add-on if your kids enjoy interactive experiences.
Tip: Purchase your Arch tickets in advance. Tram tickets often sell out, especially during peak travel seasons and weekends. At the time of our visit, tram tickets were approximately $15 for adults and $11 for kids, and booking ahead ensured we didn’t miss out.
Finally, we took the tram ride to the top of the Arch. The tram pods themselves are small and unique, which adds to the adventure. Once at the top, the views are incredible—you can see downtown St. Louis, the Mississippi River, and even Busch Stadium from above. It’s an unforgettable experience and absolutely worth doing, even if you only have a half day in the city.

We spent about four hours in St. Louis, which was just enough time to enjoy lunch, visit the Gateway Arch, and explore a bit of the museum. Looking back, we easily could have spent a little longer at the Arch Museum — there was so much more to see and learn than we expected! If we’d had a full day, we definitely would have added one of the city’s family-friendly museums to our itinerary. There’s always next time!
Final Thoughts: Is a Half-Day in St. Louis Worth It?
Our half day in St. Louis exceeded expectations and turned a simple travel day into a memorable family experience. Between seeing Busch Stadium, enjoying amazing barbecue, and visiting the Gateway Arch, we were able to experience some of the city’s most iconic attractions without feeling rushed.
What makes St. Louis especially great for families is how easy everything is to access. The main highlights are located close together, parking is manageable, and the activities are engaging for both kids and adults. The tram ride to the top of the Arch was the clear highlight and something our kids still talk about.
If you’re driving to Table Rock Lake or anywhere in southern Missouri, St. Louis makes the perfect stop to stretch your legs, explore, and add a little adventure to your trip.
