🚗 Road Trip Overview
Route: Cleveland → Chattanooga, Tennessee
Drive Time: About 10 hours
Length of Stay: 4 nights
Perfect For: Families looking for warmer winter weather, nature, and kid-friendly adventure

Where We Stayed
We found a cozy Airbnb in a quiet neighborhood just north of Chattanooga. It was within a 20-minute drive of all our activities and only about 10 minutes from downtown — perfect for a relaxing family base.
Day 1: Arrival and First Adventure
We arrived in Chattanooga just in time for lunch and headed straight to Taco Mamacita, a neighborhood Tex-Mex favorite. There was a short wait, but it was worth it — great tacos and margaritas for the adults!
Afterward, since it was too early to check in, we stretched our legs at Stringers Ridge Park — a gorgeous hiking and biking park in northern Chattanooga. We tackled the Stringers Ridge to Blue Trail Loop, about 3.5 miles (a bit ambitious with little kids!), but there were plenty of shorter routes and a scenic overlook with views of the Tennessee River and city skyline.

Day 2: Train Ride & Waterfall Hike
We started the morning with a trip to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, where we rode a vintage steam engine on the Missionary Ridge Local Tour. The kids loved passing through the pre–Civil War tunnel and watching the turntable demonstration at the restoration shop.

Afterward, we packed a picnic lunch and drove to Rainbow Falls Trail beginning at Signal Point Park, a 2.5-mile hike featuring a gorgeous view, beautiful waterfall, scenic rock formations and a fun bridge to walk over. Note: there are some steep areas and ledges, so it’s best for families comfortable with moderate hiking.

Day 3: History, Hiking & Ice Skating
We began our day at Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, exploring Lookout Point and learning about Civil War history. The cannons and open fields fascinated the kids, and from there, we hiked to Sunset Rock and Craven’s House Loop — both offering incredible views. (Be mindful: there are some steep drop-offs.)

After lunch, we headed downtown for Ice on the Landing, a seasonal outdoor skating rink near Union Station. The area is filled with great restaurants and festive holiday decor — we capped off the evening with dinner at Mellow Mushroom, a fun and family-friendly pizza spot.

Day 4: Ruby Falls & Aquarium Adventures
No trip to Chattanooga is complete without visiting Ruby Falls, the tallest underground waterfall in the U.S. open to the public. Discovered by Leo Lambert in 1928 and named after his wife Ruby, the guided cave tour was fascinating — and surprisingly fun for kids!

Later, we visited the Tennessee Aquarium, one of the top aquariums in the country and a must-visit for families. With its impressive ocean, river, and rainforest exhibits, there’s something to capture every child’s curiosity. Kids can watch playful otters, colorful tropical fish, and even touch stingrays in the interactive touch tanks. It’s the perfect rainy-day or chilly winter stop, allowing the family to explore fascinating wildlife without worrying about the weather. The aquarium also offers engaging educational displays and hands-on activities, making it a fun and learning-filled experience for both kids and adults alike.

And of course, we couldn’t leave without dessert! We hit Clumpies Ice Cream Co. — not once, but twice — because it was that good. 🍦

Day 5: Strolling the Walnut Street Bridge
Before heading home, we walked across the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge — one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world — and enjoyed the views of the Tennessee River and city skyline. It was the perfect peaceful ending to our trip.
