If you’re looking for an easy, affordable, memory-filled getaway in Ohio that works for a large family (or multiple families), Austin Lake Campground Steubenville, Ohio is such a hidden gem. We recently spent 3 nights at Austin Lake Campground for a big family weekend — and it was one of those trips where the kids were outside from morning to night and the adults actually got to relax.
If you need a spot where cousins can run free, meals can be shared, and there’s plenty to keep everyone busy — this is it.
Why Austin Lake Campground Is Perfect for Large Families

The campground is large and spread out, with:
- Mostly RV sites
- Tent camping areas
- Several cabin rentals
- Multiple playgrounds
- Charcoal grills throughout
- Fishing ponds
- Golf cart rentals
- A large lake with swimming and water activities
But what made this trip especially perfect for us?
We rented three cabins right next to each other.
And honestly — that was the game changer.
The kids could bounce between cabins.
Meals were shared.
Coffee was passed back and forth in the mornings.
Evenings were spent together without feeling cramped.
If you’re planning a multi-family weekend or cousin trip, I highly recommend booking cabins side-by-side.

Cabin Setup for a Large Group
The cabins gave us:
- Air conditioning
- Real beds (huge win with kids)
- Covered porch space
- Easy access to outdoor grilling
We brought coolers and easy-to-make meals, grilled dinners together, and let the kids eat picnic-style outside.
It felt like summer camp — but way more comfortable.
What There Is to Do at Austin Lake Campground
One of the best parts? You truly don’t have to leave the campground all weekend. Many activities are included on the Adventure Pass, which is an additional $20/person or $15/child a weekend.
🏖 Austin Lake & Swimming Area

The lake is the heart of the campground.
There’s:
- A designated swimming area
- A floating water ninja course (major kid highlight) – additional $20/per adult, $15/child
- Kayak, pedal boats and bumper boat rentals
- Pontoon rentals
Our kids could have stayed at the lake all day.
The water ninja course was especially fun for bigger kids and teens — it turned into friendly competitions and nonstop laughs.
🎣 Fishing Ponds
Scattered throughout the campground are 3 fishing ponds — perfect for early morning or evening fishing with kids.
It’s relaxed, low-pressure fishing — ideal for beginners.

🛝 Playgrounds & Open Space
There are multiple playgrounds (and gaga pits) throughout the campground, which makes it easy if you’re staying in different areas.
You’ll also find charcoal grills spread out — perfect for group dinners.
🚗 Golf Cart Rentals

If you’re staying with a big group, golf carts are worth it.
They make it easy to:
- Haul coolers and gear
- Shuttle tired kids
- Explore the campground
Plus, kids think riding around in a golf cart is half the fun.
💎 Gem Mining
Gem mining was a fun surprise activity and a hit with younger kids. It’s an easy add-on activity that feels special without requiring a lot of time.
