A Lake Keowee summer vacation is ideal for families seeking a relaxing week on the water. About a 10.5-hour drive from Cleveland, the lake offers stunning scenery, plenty of water activities, and a peaceful setting perfect for families or groups looking to unwind. With waterfront homes, boat access, and endless opportunities for fun on and in the water, it’s easy to see why Lake Keowee is such a popular family getaway.
Stay right on Lake Keowee
The best way to enjoy Lake Keowee is to stay right on the water. Many rentals offer dock access, kayaks, and spacious decks, making it easy to start your day with coffee overlooking the lake or spend evenings watching the sunset. A lakefront home gives families plenty of room to spread out while staying connected. Here is where we stayed in Seneca and it was lovely!

Water Sports and Cliff Jumping
The lake is perfect for all kinds of water fun. Kayaking around the calm coves is a relaxing way to explore, while boat tubing and water skiing provide an adrenaline boost for thrill-seekers. We rented a 20′ Chaparral from High Falls Boat Rentals and it did not disappoint.

For those looking for a little adventure, there is one designated cliff for jumping. Leaping into the clear water below adds excitement to your lake days and creates memories that last long after the trip ends.
Swimming, fishing and kayaking off the dock is still a hit, too. Younger kids can splash safely in shallow areas, while older kids practice tricks or relax in the water after a round of tubing or kayaking.

Lake Keowee Waterfalls
Lake Keowee is part of a region dotted with waterfalls. Some, like Falls Creek Falls and Keowee Falls, are accessible by boat, creating scenic stops for a swim or photos. While not all waterfalls flow directly into the lake, the area’s streams and creeks make it a beautiful place to explore for anyone who loves nature.

Exploring the Area around Lake Keowee
While most visitors spend their time on the water, the surrounding area has plenty to offer. Stumphouse Tunnel is a fascinating spot to explore — a partially completed 19th-century railroad tunnel surrounded by lush forest, perfect for a short hike and some cool photo opportunities.
Another must-see is Station Cove Falls, a beautiful waterfall with a moderate hiking trail that ends at a stunning cascade. It’s a great way to mix in a little adventure while still enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
In addition to these spots, there are local shops, scenic overlooks, and other hiking trails nearby, making it easy to balance lake relaxation with short excursions.

If you have extra time, consider visiting Whitewater Falls, about 45 minutes from Lake Keowee. It’s one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern United States, and the short paved trail to the overlook makes it accessible for all ages. Even if you don’t hike the stairs, the main viewing platform offers an incredible view and is well worth the stop.
