Every year, our family makes time for a ski trip, and this year we set our sights on Okemo in Ludlow, Vermont. About eight and a half hours from Cleveland, Ohio, Okemo is perfect for families looking for a mix of thrilling slopes, beginner-friendly runs, and plenty of family fun off the mountain. With the Epic Pass in hand, we were ready for a four-day winter getaway.
For this trip, we stayed in a cozy VRBO about 20 minutes from Okemo. The snowy backyard was a huge hit with the kids, who loved sledding after skiing each day.

We left Cleveland on Friday afternoon and arrived around 5 p.m.—just in time to set up camp, grill dinner, and enjoy s’mores under the stars. It was the perfect way to ease into the weekend.

The Meadow Run Trail was one of our favorites—family-friendly, shaded, and full of river views, rocks to climb, and the beautiful waterfall.

Just a short trek from Cucumber Falls, you’ll find the Meadow Run Natural Waterslides—a thrilling adventure awaits! These smooth rock chutes transform into natural water slides, leading into shallow, splash-friendly pools. Perfect for all ages, there are gentle areas for little ones and exciting slides for the older kids to enjoy. It’s a place your kids will never want to leave—a summer must-do!

After lunch (and some much-needed iced coffee from Ohiopyle Coffee Company), we rented bikes at Ohiopyle Trading Post.
The GAP Trail is mostly flat, scenic, and great for all skill levels.
We rode for about an hour and a half, crossing bridges and stopping for river views.
The kids loved the mix of adventure and independence on their bikes.

We crossed into Canada by car through a New York border crossing, and the process was very manageable with kids. We waited about 20 minutes in line, but once we reached the checkpoint, everything moved quickly. Depending on your route, you may cross using bridges like the Rainbow Bridge, Peace Bridge, or Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.

After the boat tour, we walked about 0.7 miles to Journey Behind the Falls. Descend 125 feet in an elevator and explore historic tunnels leading to portals behind the thundering waterfall. The outdoor observation deck offers an awe-inspiring side view of the Horseshoe Falls—a completely different perspective from the boat.

Day Three: A Relaxing Farewell
Our final morning was spent leisurely at KOA, letting the kids enjoy one last swim. After packing up, we drove back to Cleveland with hearts full of memories from a Niagara Falls family adventure.

However, one thing we learned is that ski-in/ski-out isn’t always as simple as it sounds—especially if your kids are in ski school. Depending on where your lodging is located, you may still need to walk or shuttle to the exact drop-off area, which can feel like a lot when you’re managing multiple kids and gear in the morning.
Nearby Rentals (More Space + Flexibility)
We chose to stay in a rental home, which gave us more space and flexibility—especially for meals, downtime, and spreading out with a big family.
For us, the extra space, having a full kitchen and more bedrooms was worth the short drive to the mountain.

We visited Deep Creek Lake with our family of 7 plus grandparents and found it to be one of the best quick road trips for families—especially if you’re looking for something simple, scenic, and fun for all ages.
We also booked directly through Railey Vacations, which helped us avoid extra fees you often see on Airbnb or VRBO.
For families, staying close to the lake (even if not directly on it) offers a great balance of convenience and value.
That said—if being right on the water is a priority, there are plenty of lakefront rentals with private docks that would be amazing for boating and swimming.

Renting a boat was hands-down our favorite part of the trip. We spent most of our time swimming, tubing, and just enjoying the lake.
