We visited Newport, Rhode Island in November over Thanksgiving week — and it turned out to be one of the coldest weeks of the year. Temperatures stayed below freezing every single day.
While we couldn’t do everything on our list because of the weather, Newport still completely delivered. With dramatic ocean views, historic mansions, incredible seafood, and even a day trip to Boston, this winter getaway ended up being cozy, memorable, and surprisingly peaceful.
If you’re wondering whether Newport is worth visiting in winter, here’s exactly what we did — and what we’d recommend.
Exploring Newport, Rhode Island in November offers a unique experience that combines chilly weather with stunning coastal views.
The Cliff Walk (Worth It — Even in the Cold)

The Cliff Walk was easily the highlight of our trip — and we actually went back multiple days.
The views truly never got old. Some days the ocean was calm; other days waves crashed dramatically against the rocks. With fewer crowds in winter, parts of the walk felt peaceful and almost cinematic.
One of our favorite parts was finding a section where you can walk down to the beach. Getting closer to the water — even bundled up — gave us a completely different perspective of the coastline.
The views of the mansions from behind are incredible. Seeing these massive Gilded Age homes perched on the cliffs is something you just don’t get from the road.
Winter tip: Wear insulated boots and layers. The wind off the Atlantic is intense.

Touring the Mansions: The Breakers

While we walked around several of Newport’s famous mansions from the outside, we chose to tour The Breakers, the Vanderbilt family’s summer home.
Calling it a “cottage” feels funny — it’s more like a European palace. The grand staircase, ornate ceilings, and ocean-facing rooms are stunning. Touring at least one mansion is a must in winter since it gives you a warm indoor activity that still feels iconic to Newport.
If you only choose one mansion, The Breakers is a great option.

Brenton Point State Park (Best on a Sunny Day)
On one slightly warmer and sunny day, we headed to Brenton Point State Park, and it was absolutely worth waiting for better weather.
The wide-open ocean views are gorgeous, and the rocky shoreline was perfect for little kids to climb and explore. It felt adventurous but manageable, and we spent about an hour walking, climbing rocks, and taking in the scenery.
If you’re visiting Newport in winter, save this stop for your clearest day.

Fort Adams + Scenic Ocean Drive
We attempted to visit Fort Adams, but it was closed for the season — and honestly, it was too cold to walk around anyway.
Instead, we pivoted and did the famous Ocean Drive, which ended up being the perfect winter alternative.
The 10-mile coastal drive offers nonstop views of rocky shoreline, expansive ocean, and beautiful homes. You can enjoy most of it from the warmth of your car — ideal when temperatures are below freezing.
Sometimes winter travel just means adjusting your plans — and this was a great swap.

Where We Ate: Bowen’s Wharf, The Mooring & Anthony’s Seafood

One evening, we walked around Bowen’s Wharf before dinner. Even in the cold, the harbor area has such a charming New England feel — boats in the marina, historic buildings, cozy shops glowing with warm light.
Our favorite restaurant of the trip was The Mooring Seafood Kitchen, right on the water. After a freezing day outside, sitting down to warm seafood with harbor views felt perfect.
And of course, you can’t visit Newport without lobster.
We picked up fresh lobster and lobster rolls from Anthony’s Seafood, a local seafood market in town. One night, we cooked lobster for dinner — which made for such a cozy New England evening. The lobster rolls were fresh, simple, and exactly what you hope for in Rhode Island.
If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, grabbing fresh seafood for one meal is highly recommended.

Day Trip to Boston
Since we were already in Newport, we took a day trip to Boston (about 1.5 hours away).
We walked part of the Freedom Trail, starting near Boston Common and making our way through several historic stops before warming up at Quincy Market for lunch.
We didn’t complete the entire trail because of the cold, but even doing part of it gave us a great feel for the city.
If you have an extra day, Boston makes an easy and worthwhile winter addition.
