How to Get to Niagara Falls from Ohio
Niagara Falls, Ontario is an easy and very manageable road trip from Northeast Ohio. The drive from the Cleveland area is about 3 to 3.5 hours (similar to other weekend road trips), making it perfect for a long weekend.
We crossed into Canada by car through a New York border crossing, and the process was very manageable with kids. We waited about 20 minutes in line, but once we reached the checkpoint, everything moved quickly. Depending on your route, you may cross using bridges like the Rainbow Bridge, Peace Bridge, or Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
Important Tips:
- Passports are required for all travelers (including kids)
- Border wait times can vary—weekends and holidays tend to be busiest
- Have documents ready and easily accessible when you arrive
- Expect a quick stop with questions about your trip
Where We Stayed: KOA Holiday Niagara Falls (Family-Friendly Cabin Stay)
If you’re deciding where to stay in Niagara Falls with kids, there are plenty of hotel options close to the falls—but if you want more space and built-in activities, this is a great alternative.
We stayed at KOA Holiday Niagara Falls, located about 15 minutes from the falls, and it ended up being a great option for our family.
Our Deluxe Cabin accommodated up to eight people and included:
- Two bedrooms and a pull-out sofa
- A full kitchenette and bathroom
- A propane grill and outdoor fire pit
The campground felt like a family-friendly mini resort, with plenty of activities to keep kids busy between exploring the falls.
Amenities included:
- Two outdoor pools (including a shallow kids’ pool)
- Indoor pool
- Large playground
- Mini golf
- Bounce pillow
- Pickleball and basketball courts
- Outdoor movie screen
- Bike and golf cart rentals
We especially loved how safe and easy it felt to let the kids explore and play—it made downtime just as fun as the main attractions.

Day Two: The Marvels of Niagara Falls
Voyage to the Falls
We began the day downtown with lunch at Hard Rock Café, where the kids loved their surprise toys. Then, we embarked on Niagara City Cruises – Voyage to the Falls, a 20-minute boat ride getting us up close to the Horseshoe Falls.
- Wear ponchos! You’ll get splashed.
- Kids love the excitement, but there’s an indoor section for those who need a break.

Journey Behind the Falls
After the boat tour, we walked about 0.7 miles to Journey Behind the Falls. Descend 125 feet in an elevator and explore historic tunnels leading to portals behind the thundering waterfall. The outdoor observation deck offers an awe-inspiring side view of the Horseshoe Falls—a completely different perspective from the boat.
- Make reservations for both the Voyage to the Falls and Journey Behind the Falls to skip long waits.

Day Three: A Relaxing Farewell
Our final morning was spent leisurely at KOA, letting the kids enjoy one last swim. After packing up, we drove back to Cleveland with hearts full of memories from a Niagara Falls family adventure.
You can easily customize this itinerary depending on your kids’ ages and energy level.
