With Busch Stadium, Ballpark Village, Salt + Smoke, and the Gateway Arch all located close together downtown, St. Louis made it easy to explore without needing a full day. In this post, I’m sharing exactly how we spent our half day in St. Louis with kids, what was worth it, and tips to help you plan your own family stop.
This ended up being one of our favorite ways to experience the best things to do in St. Louis with kids without needing a full day.
Is St. Louis Worth Visiting for Just Half a Day?
Yes — This is a great stop for families with kids of all ages, especially if you’re looking for something easy, walkable, and engaging without overpacking your day. Downtown St. Louis has several major attractions close together, so it’s easy to fit in a meal, a little sightseeing, and one memorable activity without turning it into a full overnight stop. For families, the Gateway Arch is the standout experience, and the nearby stadium and restaurant area make the stop feel easy and fun.

Stop 1: Busch Stadium & Ballpark Village
Our first stop was Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals. Even without going inside, it was fun to walk around the area and see the stadium up close. If your kids love sports, this is an easy first stop that adds a little excitement without taking much time.
We also walked around Ballpark Village, which felt lively, open, and family-friendly during the day. There was plenty of space for kids to move around, and it was an easy add-on before lunch.
If you have more time, you could also consider catching a game or doing a stadium tour, but even a quick stop outside was enough for our kids to enjoy.

Stop 2: Lunch at Salt + Smoke
We had lunch at Salt + Smoke in Ballpark Village, and it was one of the best meals of our trip. It was casual, quick enough for a travel day, and easy with kids. The brisket, ribs, and mac and cheese were all excellent, and the location made it a super convenient stop before heading to the Gateway Arch.

Stop 3: Visit the Gateway Arch, Museum & Tram Ride
After lunch, we headed to the Gateway Arch, which was the highlight of our visit and an absolute must-do when visiting St. Louis with kids.
We started in the museum, which is free to enter and surprisingly engaging for kids. The exhibits are modern, interactive, and easy to explore without taking too much time. It’s well done and gives helpful context before heading up into the Arch itself.
Next, we did the virtual reality experience, which showed how the Arch was built and offered a unique, immersive perspective. This was a big hit with the kids and helped bring the history and construction to life in a fun, memorable way. The virtual reality show can be purchased as part of a combo ticket with the tram ride, making it an easy add-on if your kids enjoy interactive experiences.
Tip: Purchase your Arch tickets in advance. Tram tickets often sell out, especially during peak travel seasons and weekends.
Finally, we took the tram ride to the top of the Arch. The tram pods themselves are small and unique, which adds to the adventure. Once at the top, the views are incredible—you can see downtown St. Louis, the Mississippi River, and even Busch Stadium from above. It’s an unforgettable experience and absolutely worth doing, even if you only have a half day in the city.

Tips for Planning a Half Day in St. Louis with Kids
- Park downtown and keep your itinerary simple. The biggest highlights are close together, which makes this an easy stop with kids.
- Book Gateway Arch tram tickets ahead of time. This is the one part of the day I would definitely plan in advance.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Even for a short visit, there is a decent amount of walking between attractions.
- Keep expectations realistic. A half day is enough for lunch, the Arch, and one or two nearby stops — but not enough to see everything.
- Pair this stop with a longer family road trip (we share more ideas in our family road trip guides). It works especially well as a break in the drive to southern Missouri destinations.

Final Thoughts: Our Experience Visiting St. Louis with Kids
Our half day in St. Louis ended up being one of our favorite travel day stops. It broke up a long drive in the best way and gave us a chance to experience something new without adding extra stress to the trip.
Between seeing Busch Stadium, enjoying an easy lunch at Salt + Smoke, and riding to the top of the Gateway Arch, it felt like we got a great mix of fun, food, and sightseeing in just a few hours.
If you’re heading to Table Rock Lake or anywhere in southern Missouri, this is such an easy and worthwhile stop to add to your itinerary. It’s simple, memorable, and one of those stops that makes the journey just as fun as the destination.
